Relocating is incredibly stressful, as shown by a recent report that showed it was one of life’s most stressful events alongside divorce and death. This guide is designed to highlight some of the key things that you should consider when relocating to reduce your stress levels.
We believe that the secret to a straightforward relocation is careful planning. Work out exactly what you need to do before the day of the move to prevent any last minute panics. For example:
- Make a list of what you want to put into storage
- Decide what items you are going to ask a moving company to transport for you
- Make a list of the paperwork that you need to prepare (visas etc)
- Check your insurance arrangements
Get a clear idea of your relocation package from your boss. Many companies offer excellent relocation benefits. Understanding what these are will ensure that you do not have to spend money that you don’t have to.
Then start preparing for the move by having a clear out. Over the years most people accumulate huge amounts of items that they do not need. Be firm with yourself by asking if you really want to keep such and such and if so why. Anything that you don’t want can be donated to your favourite charity shop.

Most importantly, make sure that you have somewhere arranged to stay when you arrive. Decide whether you want to stay in a hotel, serviced apartment or private property rental and the pros and cons of each.
