Moving abroad can be very stressfulas there are so many uncertainties and new things to get used to.
We’ve put together this guide tohelp make your move a little bit easier.
Budgeting
It’s important to put together abudget for the first few months before you find your feet as this is the timewhen most people tend to overspend. Simple things could help you reduce yourcosts such as cutting down on how much you eat in restaurants and staying in aserviced apartment rather than a hotel. On average serviced apartments tend tobe around 25% cheaper than hotel accommodation.
Preparations
Make sure that all the necessarypaperwork has been completed well in advance of your departure date. This willensure that you do not have any last minute panics about visas, insurance etc.
MovingBelongings
Make a list of what you are planningto do with your belongings. Decide what you need to put in storage and what youare planning to take with you. We recommend that you personally transport anyvaluable or sentimental items to prevent them from getting lost in the move.
Entitlements
Make sure that you are not spendingmoney that you don’t have to. Many companies give their employees relocationpackages. If you haven’t been told about these ask your human resourcedepartment what your company policy is.
Healthcare
Before leaving check what thehealthcare facilities where you’re moving to are. At this point you should alsoconfirm your cover with your medical insurance provider and see if youremployer offers any health benefits to employees working abroad.
Language
Nothing will make you feel less athome than not being able to communicate. Going on a basic language course canhave a very positive effect on your relocation experience. It will make thedifference between being understood and feeling frustrated because no-one knowswhat you are talking about.
Keeping in Touch
Leaving your friends and family isoften the hardest thing about relocating with work. Don’t forget to giveeveryone you want to keep in touch with your email address and telephone numberbefore you go. That way you can still hear all their news even when you are inanother country. Also you should re-direct your post after you’ve left so thatyou don’t miss anything important.
